Fish as pets. πŸ™„ πŸ

What’s the deal with that?! I just don’t get it. I know a couple who are crazy about pet fish, I think they have close to 30 of them. Different kinds – guppies, fighter, angel and what not. They like them too, not in a yummy way but like liking a pet. And the effort they put in for those fish are way too much, they have to clean all the tanks every week, move the fish into a bucket, move them back, ensure the temp and pH levels don’t vary too much etc. I could never do something so much for pets fish.

They wanted me to give it a go and gave me 4 guppies. Cute little finsters. I religiously washed the fish bowl fortnightly and fed them on time etc. One day, after six successful months, I washed the bowl and added new water and they died 😒. It was saddening. But that’s life in a fish bowl, I guess.

I resolved never to have fish again, not like eat-have, more like pet-have. Then I started thinking about why the pet fish concept is so different than a pet dog or pet cat 🐈. For one, there is no emotional connect, they don’t come running to me when I open the door or purr for food when I come home.

Secondly, it’s just weird having them in a small fish bowl. They just go round and round, nothing new to see for them ever. If it’s a dog, i could take it for a walk, maybe to the beach even. If I take fish to the beach that’ll be sadistic, right?!. Like taking a diabetic to a chocolate factory.

Thirdly, I can’t cuddle with them or event ‘pet’ them, like I might do with a dog or cat. There is just no connection. They don’t even make movies about fish – Life of Pets didn’t have a role for a fish. You say ‘finding Nemo’, I say ‘That’s an ocean, this is a fish bowl, believe me, no one is going to lose anyone in there’; you say ‘how about Free Willy’, I say ‘really πŸ™„, you are gonna compare a guppy to a killer whale’; Don’t say Jaws!.

So many movies have been made with dogs+humans. And I’m sure cats have made a lot of movies with humans+cats

So, all I’m saying is let the fish be! It’s cruel to keep them in a bowl.
